The bottom line is calories--eat more than you expend, you gain weight. Eat less than you expend, you lose weight. Without a calorie deficit, no weight loss would occur, and altering the ratio of protein, fat and carbohydrates would have little to no effect on the rate of fat loss when calories were held constant. The fundamental requirement for fat loss is would be the establishment of a calorie deficit.
